May Is Better Hearing & Speech Month

Approximately 46 million Americans experience some form of communication disorder, but only about 1 in 4 people who could benefit from treatment actually seek help. Of these individuals who experience communication difficulties, it is estimated that approximately 37.5 million will report some degree of hearing loss. Early identification of hearing loss is critical, as even mild hearing loss can impact your life and lead to academic and social difficulties. Further, recent research has shown that untreated hearing loss is linked to depression and social isolation, fatigue, and even earlier onset of dementia than in individuals with no hearing loss. Treatment can significantly improve quality of life for the person suffering from hearing loss, as well as communication with family, peers, coworkers, and during doctor’s appointments.
